A major winter storm is causing substantial transportation impacts in Summit County and surrounding counties.

Weather
According to the National Weather Service, moderate to heavy snow will continue through about midnight tonight, with 8-18 inches of additional snow possible, at rates of up to 1-2 inches per hour. Winds in the valleys are about 20 mph; winds on ridges and passes are blowing up to 60-80 mph. Snow is forecast to diminish overnight, but strong winds will continue. Winds will increase during the day on Saturday to about 70-80 mph, leading to extremely poor visibility.

Another storm system will move into Summit County Saturday night, continuing into Sunday, with 1-3 inches forecast overnight and an additional 3 inches on Sunday. Snowfall is forecast to end late Sunday night or early Monday.

Travel and Transportation
Officials from CDOT and Summit County are discouraging travel by commercial and passenger vehicles, in order to allow road crews to conduct snow-removal operations and to allow efficient travel by emergency vehicles.

CDOT has enacted multiple closures on many sections of state highways in and around Summit County. There are many areas with zero visibility. CDOT does not recommend traveling alternate routes in the event of I-70 closures. For the most up-to-date information on I-70 and other state highways, visit www.COtrip.org.

Summit County Road & Bridge is actively working to keep arterial County roads clear, including those that serve as Summit Stage bus routes. Dillon Dam Road is closed and will likely not open before Saturday morning, because of poor visibility and snow loading.

Summit Stage buses are running more or less on time, with some routes 5-10 minutes behind schedule.

Fire Safety
Local fire officials are encouraging people to clear fire hydrants and gas meters of snow. Many fire hydrants are buried by snow; falling or shedding snow on a gas meter can break the gas line, causing an explosion inside the building.

Warming Center
The lobby of the Silverthorne Recreation Center is serving as a warming center for people who need to get out of the cold and warm up.
