Beyond the Brochure: Experiencing Park County’s Enchantment Up Close and Personal

Have you ever explored the gorgeous and expansive lands of Park County, Colorado our neighbors to the southeast? Summit County is famous for outdoor recreation but there are certainly more places to explore outside of Summit.  In the Real Estate world, Park County is definitely worth looking into because prices are still low and there’s plenty of room to grow.  But today,  let’s explore ways to enjoy the unique character and outdoors in Park County, which is accessible from Summit County through Breckenridge, a 30 minute drive South if you’re in the Leadville area or about a 2 hour drive from Denver.

Boreas Pass

First up we have Boreas Pass, a historic mountain pass connecting Summit County and Park County through a scenic and educational 22-mile route. Accessible on foot, by car or bike, Boreas pass starts on the east side of Breckenridge. The gravel road curves through gorgeous aspen trees at 11,000 feet high and it brings you down into the valley on the west side of Como, a small community off Highway 285, tucked between Jefferson and Fairplay.  The drive offers stunning views, historic sites, and outdoor recreational opportunities and from there your adventures are endless as Park County stretches 2,200 square miles.

Originally used as a narrow-gauge railroad route to transport mining materials, Boreas Pass played a vital role in the area’s mining and logging industries. Today, remnants of this history can be seen along the road, including old cabins, mining structures, and the restored Section House. The road has a rich history that dates back to the late 1800s.

South Park City

Head into Fairplay and stop by The Java Moose or Mr. Burro Cafe for a coffee and lunch then walk over to the South Park Museum. Continuing with the historic theme of the area you’ll find yourself stepping back in time as you get a glimpse of what life was like in this mining town. If you’re looking to explore Fairplay as people did during these years then saddle up a horse at the American Safari Ranch and ride off on the expansive trail systems available. The thrill-seekers can rent an ATV through the same ranch to have a more fast-paced experience. If South Park sounds familiar, it’s because Fairplay is the very region that inspired the creators of the iconic South Park TV show, adding an unexpected twist to the narrative.

Eleven Mile State Park

Hop back on the road and head south to Eleven Mile State Park. It’s named after Eleven Mile Reservoir, a reservoir created by the Eleven Mile Canyon Dam on the South Platte River. If you are a fishing enthusiast, this reservoir is heavenly. There is a variety of fish species, including Trout, Salmon, and Northern Pike. You can cast from the shore or take a boat out, the park is accessible to boats, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. In the winter months, Ice fishing is popular and the frozen reservoir offers a unique, beautiful experience.

Step out of the sun for a bit and inside the park’s Interpretive Center which provides educational exhibits and programs about the local flora, fauna, and history of the area. The park often hosts guided nature walks, workshops, and events for all ages.

Bigfoot in Bailey

Lastly, back into the tall evergreens sits Bailey, CO, a small unincorporated town where residents thrive on outdoor recreation available 365 days a year. Treat yourself to the mystery and intrigue of The Sasquatch Outpost as these folks are dedicated to solving the mystery of the elusive Sasquatch. This is the perfect place to get a souvenir to take back home or send to family and friends.

If your idea of a good time is tasting local hops or grapes, then Aspen Peak Cellars Vineyard or Mad Jacks Brewery are the place for you. The daring members of your group can wander over to the Treehouse Adventure Park for a Ziplining journey among the trees. All of these attractions conveniently lie along the same stretch of road.

There you have it! From immersing yourself in the history to a quest for the unknown or for thrilling experiences, the diverse wild west towns of Park County, Colorado are sure to have something for everyone. I could go on all day about things to do in the area because as I mentioned, there are 2,200 sq miles of them, but for now you have a few destinations to add to your list next time you’re in the area.
