Nestled in Colorado’s high country, Summit and Eagle Counties are known for their breathtaking landscapes, world-class recreation, and vibrant communities, but it can still be challenging to feel connected. Colorado’s culture of rugged individualism often makes communities feel more independent than welcoming, and when the mountains are your second home, it can be hard to know how to plug in. At the same time, our mountain towns face unique challenges like food insecurity, trail maintenance, and limited local resources.
Volunteering is one of the most meaningful ways to bridge those gaps. Not only does it meet real community needs, it’s also a great way to build relationships and feel at home in the mountains. Here are some standout organizations making an impact, plus other opportunities to get involved.
Summit and Eagle Counties are made up of smaller towns and, in turn, smaller charities. While these nonprofits do important work, many don’t have the staff, budget, or resources for large-scale fundraising or outreach. That’s where The Summit Foundation comes in.
Often called the “Heart of Summit County,” the Foundation raises funds and distributes grants to dozens of local organizations, from youth programs to environmental groups, allowing them to focus on serving the community. They also provide scholarships, sponsor community events, and connect volunteers with opportunities across the county.
By supporting The Summit Foundation, you’re not just helping one nonprofit, you’re strengthening the entire network of services that keeps our mountain communities thriving.
Mountain Top Explorium, a nonprofit children’s museum in Breckenridge, creates hands-on educational experiences that inspire learning through play. With interactive exhibits, creative workshops, and community programs, the museum helps children and families engage with science, art, and imagination in a fun, meaningful way.
Our own Anne Skinner serves on their board, making this one especially close to our hearts. From volunteering at events to supporting fundraisers, there are many ways to help sustain this beloved community resource.
With thousands of acres of national forest surrounding Summit County communities like Breckenridge, Frisco, and Silverthorne, keeping trails and natural spaces healthy is a major task. Friends of Dillon Ranger District (FDRD) partners with the U.S. Forest Service to maintain trails, restore habitats, and promote forest health.
Our own team member, Mark, volunteers with FDRD, giving his time to trail crews and educational programs. Through his involvement, he’s seen firsthand the impact dedicated volunteers can make on preserving the outdoor spaces we all enjoy.
Volunteers can join trail crews, help with forest monitoring, or support fundraising events that keep these programs thriving. Whether you have a free Saturday to swing a Pulaski on a trail project or you’d rather help at an event, FDRD provides hands-on opportunities to protect the land that makes mountain living so special.
Finally, we want to highlight Smart Bellies, a nonprofit tackling child hunger in Summit and Lake Counties. Their weekend “food bag” program ensures that kids who rely on school meals don’t go hungry when Friday rolls around. Beyond that, they provide produce boxes, classroom snacks, and even holiday meal kits, making access easy and stigma-free.
Volunteering with Smart Bellies is hands-on and immediate, as you can help pick up food, pack bags, or deliver meals directly to families. It’s a tangible way to make a difference in the lives of kids right here in our mountain towns.
In addition to these featured organizations, there are many other ways to give back:
We’re proud to roll up our sleeves and join Smart Bellies for a volunteer day on Tuesday, November 18, and we’d love for you to join us. It’s the perfect opportunity to give back, connect with neighbors, and see firsthand the impact local nonprofits are making.
